DPS mock up

What type of magazine is it?

Rolling Stone is a United States-based magazine devoted to music, politics, and popular culture that is published every two weeks. Rolling Stone was founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner and music critic Ralph J. Gleason. The magazine was known for its political coverage beginning in the 1970s. Rolling Stone changed its format in the 1990s to appeal to younger readers, often focusing on young television or film actors and pop music. This led to criticism that the magazine was emphasizing style over substance. In recent years, the magazine has resumed its traditional mix of content, including in-depth political stories, and has seen circulation rise.

From the front cover what kinds of issues/articles are going to be inside?

The cover lines on the front of rolling stones range from music topics’ Cher back on top’, to political ‘Norm Macdonald’ and environmental issues ‘ Lost tribes of the Amazon’ this tells us that the rolling stones covers a number of topical issues not just music stories and interviews. This also means that the rolling stones had a wider target audience because it is not just for those who are interested in one type of music set such as R&B but hosts a wide range of cover artists on their covers as well as articles inside.

Who is the target audience for the magazine? What particular age group? What are their interests? How do you know all of this?

The target audience for rolling stones magazine is 20 to 40 year olds who have an interest in rock music, however since the rolling stones changed its format to appeal to a younger wider audience, it widen its music range and now covers everything form pop, R &B and rock this had become its target audience for the magazine.

Who is on the front cover and why?

On this issue Britney spears is featured on the cover this caused controversial issues as eyebrows were raised when a then-17 year-old Britney Spears was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in a sexually suggestive Lolita-themed photo shoot which triggered widespread speculation that the singer had had breast implants. At this time when this magazine was launched Britney spears was the hottest new artist that everyone wanted to know and interview, the cover lines suggest a personal and intimate interview and exclusive to the magazine.

What does the main cover line say? What does this imply about the artist/band??

What overall message is the artist/band giving? ‘Britney spears in side the heart, mind and bedroom of a teen dream’ The main cover line tells us that inside they will be talking about and revelling all the information about the artists on personal levels as they mention heart and mind . The cover line is also suggestive as it says ‘bedroom’ again this is something that is also personal. Its inclusive of the target audience as it mentions ‘team dream’ attracting male readers and a provocative image also helps to entice them in and to buy the magazine.

What does the design of the mast head tell you about the magazine? What does the title of the magazine tell you about: 1. the readership 2. Its image 3. Its style

The masthead for this magazine is normally always covered slightly by the main image. This is because their masthead is an extremely well known logo and design, it is not essential it stand out. However, the masthead can still be seen slightly. It is in quite a professional looking font, because of the 3-dimensional effects that have been added to it.

What do the ‘kickers’ in the coverlines suggest will be inside the magazine?

What does this tell you about the type of audience the magazine expects to get?The cover lines range on the front the cover this shows that this magazine is extremely diverse, and can appeal to people of most ages, with interest in all different types of topics making the magazine individual and unique.

What colours are used? Do you find them attractive?

The background that the artist ‘Britney Spears’ is laying on and is also used as the magazine background is a hot pink colour, this is effective as it is a bold bright colour and therefore eye catching attracting readers attention. All the text and cover lines on the front are in white this is a contrast to the bright pink and stands out even more so as the font is bold. I find them attractive as a female as they are feminine colours.

What fonts are used and why?

The font used on the front cover is a sans serif font, to appeal to the younger members of the target audience. The font is extremely plain and basic, meaning that the user is forced to focus directly one what they are actually reading, and not the distracted by different font styles.

What strategies does the magazine use to attract the audience?

As the magazine has been successful for many years it is not that important for it to attract the audience, however the bright colours and eye catching image helps to do so.

Double page spread
1) How does the choice of band featured in the article suggest who the target audience will be?
The band featured in the article is unsigned artists, named ‘new noise 2009’ this suggest that the target audience is young audience from 18 + that are interested in new and up and coming bands and music.
2) What type of language is used in the article? Give examples of words or phrases which are specific to the style of the magazine
The article has minimal text and is in a conversational style, the language is fairly colloquial as she is talking about her experience about meeting other bands and getting into the industry and her personal experiences. An example of informal language used within the article is ‘She was at some sort of fashionable east London hang out – so far so cool, so haircut’ its everyday language which is accessible to its younger readers and talking in their language.
3) How is colour used? Colour is used In small quantises the slug is in large white text on a black background, A hot pink colour is used and a purple in the top right hand corner in text saying ‘New Noise 2009’ that is located in all unsigned artists articles. There also seems to be a trend throughout the magazine of starting the articles in with purple text. The drop cap is in purple following on the theme. At the bottom of also most every page in the magazine there is a square with the colours hot pink, black, blue and purple this is keeping a consistency and colour theme as these are the main colours that are used.
4) What style of text is used? Is it similar to any other pages? What does it say about the image of the magazine and the audience?
The main text is in a serif style, this is similar to all the other pages on there main text. The main headlines and the pull quotes are in sans serif font, this may have been done as the text looks bolder and easier to read in this style and therefore catch the reader’s eyes. The sans serif font also appeals to all different types of reader as It is a plain text and the magazine want the band to appeal to many readers as possible as they are new and up and coming. if was in more of an old English style this would appeal to a certain target audience perhaps more of a gothic reader limiting the amount of people reading the article.
5) How is the double page spread laid out? How much of the pages are taken up by images and how much by text? How does this reflect the audience? What do they value?
One side of the double page spread there is am image of Victoria Hesheth ‘Little Boots’ the artist and the other half is text that is information and introducing the band, and Victoria with minimal information, in an informal interview interview. The fact the picture takes up a whole page suggests that the readers do not wish to have much text to read and that the bands image is an important feature.
6) What tone is the magazine using when addressing the reader (as a close friend, a member of an 'in' crowd or an informed intelligent fan?) - provide evidence
The text is extremely conversational this allows the audience to connect with the writer, addressing them as what would seem a close friend. “It’s bollocks of course” uses improper language, here it’s more colloquial and uses inclusive language, both highlight the friendly relationship NME aim to gain.
7) How is the artist/band presented to the audience through the images? You may wish to carry out a textual analysis.
The image shows a girl ‘little boots’ with a pale complexion it uses close up eye level head shot showing she is on the same level as the reader making it easier for them to relate to her, it emphasises her on eyes, and all her features. Her hairstyle is relevant to today’s fashion. However personally I feel from the image it is hard to gain any insight as to the style of music the band produce or even her style of clothing as there isn’t any indications of interest or influences.
8) Does the article demand any prior knowledge? Give examples.
This particular article doesn’t require any previous knowledge as it introduces or promotes up and coming and unsigned artists. But gives you just the right amount of information, and if you are interested in the artist then you can research further.

Evaluation for Preliminary Task

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Front Cover

My front cover uses man forms of conventions of real media products. Like all magazines it contains a masthead at the top of the page, this is in larger font than any other text on the page this is eye catching and reads ‘ The Arts’ I have also positioned a strap line above the masthead which is another conventional idea although strap lines normally fall below the masthead so I am developing media conventions the strap line reads ‘The students own monthly telling you all you need to know’ this is persuasive and directly appealing to the readers attracting them. On my front cover there is also the use of kickers which promotes the features within the magazine, I have only used three and should have perhaps included more as most standard magazine include six, and consequently have challenged a convention of real media products. Most magazines have a plan background then with a photograph of a model often followed with an interview with them inside the magazine, as this is only a monthly school magazine and the model is not ‘well know’ or famous I will not be conducting a exclusive interview and I have used a whole photograph for the cover. I have also included a button on the front cover you often see this on real magazines promoting something within the magazine or a feature within it. My button is letting reader know the new performing arts building is open, also a feature within the magazine that month. My magazine has a more informal approach as the age group it is targeting students and feel informal language will appeal to them more.

Contents page

My contents page does not include as many forms of a standard conventional magazine, as it does not have a list of all the pages and features. I have chosen a colorful lay out with different shaped buttons and within them contain the contents of the magazine, this appeals and reaches students as I believe they would not enjoy reading a list of text and this way they can skim over the features and turn to any that take there interest. This could be a form of developing media products as the layouts and structures for different age groups may vary.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My front cover represents students who are interested or attend a performing arts school, for my model I have chosen a female dance student holding a dance pose, automatically potential readers can see what the magazine is about and represents the school to be a performing arts school. The features on the front cover also talk about the music department and dance show again representing those interested in music, drama and dance in any years in the school from year 7 to sixth form.
The contents page is eye catching and colourful and could represent any social group as it is not specific however the features are again related to performing arts.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The magazine would be distributed in a school environment as it is extremely exclusive for the students and relates and often features them, it also refers to school life. If this was distributed on the high street this would have no relevance or market.

What would be the audience for your media product?
My audience would be primarily student at St. Marylebone school, this is as the language used is related and extremely inclusive to the school community. It would be mainly targeted at sixth form students as a way of helping them become more involved in the school community but available to all years from ages 11 – 18 varying article ranges as well.

How did you attract/address your audience? The colour schemes used within the front cover and contents page bottle green and yellow are the school colours this makes the magazine feel part of the school and this will attract them, another way of addressing the audience is that by having a dancer in the dance studio will appeal to all the readers of all ages as all years attend dance lesson as this will reaches them all. The cover lines are all about things that are happening within the school such as ‘Sixth form prepare for dance show’ and ‘new building opens’ these are both topical issues within St Marylebone.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Whislt creating this magazine I have found many useful techniques, the technique that I felt most useful was the magnetic lasso tool on Adobe Photoshop. This allowed me to highlight sections of images and delete the background.
