Image analysis

At the beginning of the course we started analysis images using terms of denotation and connotation.
Denotation is Identification and definition of elements of a text on a basic, dictionary level, in terms of this picture the denotation is a young man holding a knife in an aggressive manner and the picture is focusing on the knife as the man is slightly blurred. A connotation is when you link an object with other signs and meanings, in this image the knife clearly links to violence, the fact that the young man is wearing sports clothes suggest adolescence, it also means that you can not see his face clearly or his eyes suggesting it could be anybody but again puts the main focus of the image on the knife, that looks used and unclean clearly not something being used to cut up carrots. Mise en scene is a term that concerns the design and arrangement of the image. The mise en scene in this picture is that the young man is wearing a hoody and baseball cap suggesting adolescence and making the audience who are looking at the image associate crime and gangs, the knife also looks as if it has been used and had marks on it.
Organisation is considering the whole organisation of the composition and framing this shot is taken as a close up as it shows head down and upper chest the main focus is on the knife as the man is blurred out, there is a relationship between the knife and the man but due to the arrangement we only focus on the knife.
